“God invented the natural numbers; all else is the work of man.” — Kronecker

Update: The original post had integer instead of natural numbers.

  1. Please, not Kronecker’s “intelligent counting” nonsense again! The integers evolved from the empty set and axiom of induction.

  2. I see: “First there was the empty set, and then it evolved.”

  3. Actually, Kronecker is supposed to have said this about the natural numbers.
For him, negative integers are already the work of man.

  4. Rene Thom felt that geometric objects were the raw material of mathematics. He said that Kronecker’s aphorism showed he had “the soul of a banker.”
